3 Tips For Choosing Granite Colors

Bertha Ruiz

Deciding to replace old counters is easy, but deciding which countertop material is right for you can be a bit overwhelming because of the different options available. Today, more and more homeowners are opting for granite due to its extreme durability. In addition, granite counters add a good amount of value to your home depending on where you live.

The color of your granite does matter when you are updating your home. Here are a few tips to help you choose a color for your new countertops.

Get Smart with Samples

A granite showroom can be a bit overwhelming since there will be numerous countertop options against a wide range of cabinetry, flooring, and lighting. Unfortunately, the granite that looks good in one area may not look good in your specific space because the cabinets, floors, and lighting will be completely different.

Your best option is to visit a showroom and gather a few granite samples that you can bring back to your own home. When choosing samples, select a large variety including neutral colors, darker stones, and even granite with specks of colors that you normally would not be drawn to.

Once you have the samples at home, place them in the area of the countertops you are replacing, and look at them all through the day and night. This will help you see the granite options against your own cabinets, floors, and décor. You will also be able to see how the different samples look in the varying lights from the morning, noon, evening, and nighttime hours.

Light Up the Darkness

If you are still unsure which granite looks best in your specific space, focus on your lighting.

If your space lacks natural light and tends to be darker throughout the majority of the day, opt for a lighter granite color or granite that has metallic speckles. For a brighter, lighter kitchen with numerous windows and an array of natural light, a darker granite color will work best.

Choosing a dark granite for a dark space will make the room appear smaller and less appealing.

Create a Combo

You do not have to choose just one color of granite. Today, more and more homeowners and builders are incorporating multiple colors of granite and other materials for the countertops in one space.

For a kitchen with an island, consider selecting two different granite colors. Opt for a dark granite for the main countertops with a lighter granite for your island.

You can also mix and match materials if preferred. A traditional granite countertop works well with the majority of the space, but include a butcher block counter for your kitchen island. This adds a bit of surprise to your space while providing you with two durable surfaces.
