Got An Old AC Unit? Three Mistakes To Fix To Extend Its Life

Bertha Ruiz

If you have an older central air conditioning unit, you're likely already feeling anxiety about the cost of replacing it in the future. If you need to extend the life of an older unit, it's imperative to take steps to keep it running smoothly outside of scheduled maintenance with your local HVAC expert. Be sure to watch out for the following mistakes in your own backyard to help preserve the life of an old AC unit.

Mistake #1: The Ground Around Your Unit

Your landscaping might be gorgeous, but it needs to be done with your air conditioning unit in mind  When planning your landscaping, consider one of the following three options:

  • Larger Plants:  A few larger shrubs can visually enhance the area of your yard around the unit, but be sure to leave enough clearance to keep air flowing freely around the intake. A distance of two to three feet is ideal, and be sure to trim the plants regularly to prevent vines or branches from getting close to the unit.
  • Mulch: If you don't have space for larger plants, mulch around the unit can keep the area looking more orderly than grass alone. If you go this route, keep the area free of weeds and stray flowers, which can put undue strain on the air filter. You'll also want to be sure that the mulch stays level to prevent water from pooling around the unit.
  • Rocks or Gravel: Rocks and gravel can keep the space safe and clean, and it's a great option if you don't have time for upkeep of plants or mulch. You'll have to do far less weeding with rocks, and they're less likely to shift and leave water behind.

Mistake #2: An Unwieldy Fire Pit

Keeping a fire pit in the backyard is a great way to relax and socialize, but you need to take special precautions to keep your warm and cozy nights from affecting your unit.

First, you need to make sure there's plenty of space between the fire pit and the unit. Because the smoke from the pit contains ashes and dust, it can easily build up in the air filter on your unit. Second, use the right wood. Because wet wood produces more smoke than dry wood, avoid using any branches or logs that have recently been rained on, helping make sure your older unit isn't working overtime to filter out the particles you're releasing with your fires.

Mistake #3: Little Monsters Playing in the Yard

Whether it's pets or kids, you need to keep the pitter-patter of little feet away from your aging AC unit. Both pets and little kids have a bad habit of digging holes and leaving behind debris, both of which can obstruct the unit from working properly. Dips in the landscape can cause water to pool in the ground, worsening air quality, while debris left around can obstruct coils or release particles that damper the efficiency of the unit.

To keep kids or pets away, you can build a small fence around the unit to add to your landscaping. You'll need to be sure to keep enough space between the unit and the fence for easy access for scheduled maintenance and repairs. You should also reinforce staying away from the fence as often as possible. Giving pets treats and creating boundaries with kids can keep them away so they don't shorten the life of your unit.

How long your older air conditioning unit stays around depends on how well you care for it. You've already been keeping up with your scheduled maintenance, but you could be making crucial mistakes that are making it age more quickly. Plan your landscaping with the unit in mind, keep your fire pit away from the unit, and teach kids and pets to stay away to help your unit run another day.
