There are not many things that are more annoying than a fly buzzing above your head. Just the mere sound of a fly can distract you and drive you crazy inside your home. Flies are also unhygienic and can carry a lot of diseases. That is why you should prevent these pests from invading your home in the first place. Here are eight ways to keep flies out of your house.
Remove All Food Sources
One of the best ways to keep flies out of your home is to remove all food sources. Flies are attracted to food and will not stay out of your house if there are food sources available. That is why you should close all food containers after you get finished with them. Also, wipe food crumbs off your counters regularly and keep your garbage bags tightly shut.
Replace Old Sponges and Mops
Old sponges and mops make great breeding grounds for flies, so you should replace them frequently. They are very inexpensive to replace and can prevent flies from invading your home. Try to replace your sponges and mops every month or so.
Make a Vinegar Trap
If there are already some flies in your house, you can get rid of them with a vinegar trap. The smell of vinegar can lure the flies right in. Just pour about an inch of apple cider vinegar in a cup and place a small plastic baggie over the cup. Then, cut the corner of the plastic baggie with a pair of scissors. The flies will be able to pass through the cup, but they will have a more difficult time escaping. Place the cup in an area flies usually gather like near the garbage can or produce bin.
Wash the Dishes Right Away
Washing the dishes is not fun and is very easy to put off. However, if you wait too long to clean your dishes, you could have a fly problem. Flies are attracted to food residue, especially sticky substances like jelly. If you do not have time to do all of the dishes right away, at least rinse off the food debris with water.
Trim Your Grass and Bushes Regularly
Trimming your grass and bushes regularly will not just improve your curb appeal; it can also keep the flies away. Flies love hiding in long bushes and tall grass. If you take the time to trim your bushes and grass every week, you can prevent flies from invading your home.
Seal Cracks in Your Windows and Doors
If you seal the cracks in your windows and doors, you will not just keep drafts out and lower your energy costs. Sealing these cracks can also prevent flies from sneaking into your home. Check your doors and windows for cracks every month and seal them up with caulk.
Clean Up After Your Pets Immediately
If you have pets, you should clean up their waste immediately. If feces is left in your backyard, it will attract a lot of flies. After your pet does his business, put the waste in a plastic bag and dispose of it in an outside garbage can.
Pick Up Fruit in Your Yard
Do you have any fruit trees in your yard? If so, you should pick up any fruit that falls on the ground immediately. The sweetness and moistness of these fruits will attract flies and keep them around your house.
If you follow these helpful tips, you can prevent flies from invading your home. However, if you still encounter flies, you should have an experienced exterminator, like one from Ace Walco & Sons Termite & Pest Control, get rid of them for you.
My name is Ian Flaherty and this is my home and garden blog about painting. Many people don't enjoy painting the rooms in their house, but I think it's a very relaxing task that I often do after work. I frequently change the colors of the rooms in my home and every time I do, it gives the home an entirely new appearance, I learned how to paint rooms many years ago when I first started changing the paint colors in my house. When I was first learning how to paint, I had a few mishaps, but then I would do research to learn how it's done right. If you want to discover a whole new world that can be achieved with paint, I hope you'll read my blog and apply these tips and ideas.
